To ensure safe manual handling, we follow three essential stages when moving objects

  • Can we avoid hazardous manual handling, so far as is reasonably practicable?

  • If we cannot avoid, we need to assess the risk of injury from any hazardous manual handling operations. We pay particular attention to the weight and location of the load we are looking to handle.

  • Once assessed, we must reduce the risk of injury from hazardous manual handling to as low as reasonably practicable. For example, using machinery to remove the need to manually handle.
